In playing Lock On I felt that once I had mastered the flight controls perfectly, I'd be ready for the air force, just like Tom Cruise in Top Gun, but without the references to homosexuality.
The Graphics and sounds in Lock On are perfect; it's the only word capable of explaining the beauty of the F15 flying low over perfect water under a Georgian sun with the Caucasus Mountains glinting in the horizon. The terrain is wonderfully rendered, but the planes are where you really see the beauty of Lock On. The cockpit is so realistic you could be mistaken it was a film, all the bobs an whistles are there, all the way down to the button which lights up the pitch display. In the Russian planes, the text is even in Russian (though you can switch it to English).
The planes perform like the real thing and everything is at your control, and I mean everything, radar, missiles, flaps, the colour underwear your pilot's wearing, well maybe not the underwear, but you get the picture. These birds are yours do with them as you will.
Lock On is serious realism, and by serious realism I mean hard. People are paid to learn and fly these planes and it takes months (and years) for them to learn how to do it properly. So don't expect to be able to pick up and play this monster of a game. It will take time and attention to get the most out of Lock On, the combat flight sim to beat all combat flight sims.
