Post Keyboard and mouse
Hi all

I seem to have an intermittent issue with my mouse and keyboard. They all of a sudden stop responding and i need to power off and on again to get them to work again.Someitmes they stop working after 5-10 mins and at other times can go for days.It does not seem to be any specific application causing the issue as it happens viewing the net, playing games or even when the pc is on idle.

Have reinstalled my operating system to try and rule out any infections or driver corruption etc as the cause.Tried reinstalling drivers.Checked bios settings and nothing seems out of place. When rebooting my mobo's error display shows ff for fully functioning so does no appear to be my motherboard.

I get nothing presented in my windows logs when this happens to give any indication on what is going on.The only new piece of equipment i have plugged into my comp was a new router from sky but logically i dont see how that can be the cause.

Have tried running perfmon and left it running to see if i can see waht is running when it happens but have not been able to have it running when the issue has arisen.

fully updated comp yesterday as a result of a format.Didn't see the error repeat until today after installing .netframework 4 and associated updates but again am struggling to see that there is any connection.

Any one have any other idea's or advice what i should try next?

Edit:-

Both are plugged into the relevant ps2 connection. It looks like the keboard looses power as the lights go out when it stops responding. It does not appear to me to be the ps2 conections at fault as they work aftre rebotting and not toouching them.Have obviously checked to make sure they are securely seated.Mouse i wireless and keyboard is wired.

Wondering if it may be an overheating issue atm as my 8800gtx was at 70c on idle.

Just gave the comp a spring clean and removed my ageia physx card as it was seated right under the gfx cards to see if helps.

Gpu down to 57 on idle and has been for 30 mins so will now monitor and see if that is the issue.

Hope it has not ruined the card as i can't afford a replacement atm.Am somewhat surprised at the nvidia drivers. Not sure if they are the cause or not but the fan speed was only at 30% under the automatic setting.

All other temps seem ok on idle

nforce at 40c
Processor at 26c

The mcp temp seems excessivly high at 235c but it has always shown this temp with this borad around 2 yrs.So think that is a faulty thermastat.Am sure if this was the true reading the board would have fried long ago.

which Nvidia driver are you running bifta ? i know the latest 280 driver has issues some have gone back to previous drivers i have done the same went back to 275.33 as i was getting problems with the latest one not working correctly and giving strange refresh rates with my monitor so maybe it could have messed up the fan control for you if your using it.

as for the MCP temp yeah if that was a true reading the board would have died already so i dont beleive it's correct.

Hi tera thanks for the input.

Was running the latest 280 driver after the fresh install however think i was using an older driver before hand.Mind you had windows updates set to auto update so i spose it may have updated that way.

It appears not to be an overheating issue though as i've had another freeze tonight.

Temps were with in 1 or 2c to what i stated earlier.

It is also for sure not a ps2 error as i have tried the mosue using the usb slot and still get the issue.

Ran a mem test and also checked my hd for errors etc and found nothing.

Spose it might be a driver issue but think i had the same set of drivers installed for around 4 months before the issue arose.

Gonna try older drivers i think and see if it helps. Will try for both gfx and chipset.

Other than that am out of idea's any more input would be appreciated.

Hmmmmm does not appear to be a driver issue.

Just froze twice in 10 mins after installing older drivers.

Was using 15.51 chipset drivers and 270.61 gfx drivers.

Tried to do a little more digging and found a pecular situation.

have just had perfmon running, nvidia monitor and the task manager at the same time and the memory usage seems odd.

Both perfmon and nvdia monitor show 34% usage but the task manager shows 25mb free out of a total of 2046 with 1610 cached.

At a bit of a loss as for what to try next. When running vista's memory tool it does not show any errors.

No bsod's although had a single beep the last freeze from the system speaker(not the sound card)

Gpu is stable now at the earlier reported temps and fan is running at 60% on idle and auto settings.

Any one have any further idea's?

hmm might be memory related somthing chewing up your ram and leaving the system without any to run and such the system cacking out although what that could be i dunno.

run resource monitor if vista has it I know windows 7 does and then click the memory tab it will show what is using the memory and how much, you might spot something using a ton or something that shouldn't be running and using a load.

you have checked all of what i would have and nothing seems to be out of place other than task manager stating only 25mb free, so yeah i would see what is using the Ram.

Well tried a few more things and still can't get to the bottome of it.

Task manager shows pretty much the same stated figures as above all but 10 or 20 meg in the text prtion on the right but at the bottom and in the graph it now shows 32% usage.

Perfmon and nvidia both state the same figures.

tried booting to safe mode with networking and had a freeze there too :(

Tried safe mode without networking and was stable for around 2-3 hours with no crash.

Re ran vista's mem test with a higher number of passes which did not flag anything.

Ran scandisc and again found nothing

Also tried a sfc /scannow form the command line to again check for corrupted files and found nothing.

Seems so intermittent i can't put my finger on it :( Sometimes am ok for 2-3 hours and at others 2-3 mins.

Starting to wonder if another reinstall is gonna be the way to go to try and rule out any possible updates as the cause.

Hard drive activity seems to be less though but think i may be clutching at straws here.

Can't really see it as a hardware issue as if it was surely i would see it crash at around the same time each boot.

Don't suppose it would indicate my power supply is on the way out

Other than that the only things i have left to try is a different keyboard, monitor or unplugging the router supplied by sky but again can't see that they are the cause as they work after a reboot.

Don't see any hardware failures in the reliability monitor.

Other than that am at a loss as to what could be causing the issue.

Post Re: Keyboard and mouse
Well have reinstalled windows over the weekend and the error persists so looks like a hardware issue :(

Have tried unseating and reseating ram and vid card which was no help.Tried boting my system using just 1 ram stick and then the other.

Have my case open with a big fan blowing air into the comp and has been stable for around 6-8 hours now so looks like somehting has been over heating and is on it's last legs.As my vid card was getting a little hot on idle earlier in the week with the newer nvidia drivers am inclined to think it is my vid card on it's way out.

Just gotta look for a suitable replacement now i spose and hope im right with my assumptions.

Any one have any suggestions for a card around the £150 mark?

I have one of these and when it's not in my PC it sleeps next to me in my bed. :P

One thing to note though. I had a 750W PSU in my PC and although it was a very good PSU I kept having reboot problems when playing games (like Crysis 2) on full whack (which is mouthwateringly gorgeous).

Swapped it for this one and the problem went away.

Might not be in the 150 mark any longer now but if you already got a PSU like that you're halfway there! :D

Thanks for the suggestion mad :D

A couple of questions if you don't mind.

What sort of fps and resolutions are you using the card at with crysis 2 on full settings?

What specs are you using with it.Am wondering if it might be overkill for my system. At the moment am only using.

foxconn c51xem2aa mobo nforce 590sli chipset
amd 5200+ dual core 2.6gig processor
4 gig ram

Will look to replace these in the early part of next year as the old finances won't allow it before hand.

What is the noise level of the card like? My 8800 gtx used to sound like it was taking off under load is why i ask.It was loud enough to drown out the noise of the games somewhat and as i do most of my gaming late at night the volume can't be increased.
