A sequel to Massive Assault, it has a lot to live up to and we're pleased to say that it lives up to the name perfectly.
For those of you not familiar with turn-based games; they all follow the same premise - you have a set amount of credits that you can use to build units per turn, these units can move a set distance each turn, can inflict a set amount of damage, within a set area, and can take a set amount of punishment. With these units you need to conquer new territories to get more credits to eventually defeat an enemy. Domination adds great little extras to balance and add turn games from a game of chess into a massive tactical battleground.
For a start Domination has a territory defence system that gives reinforcements to a defending territory, and there is the system of secret allies letting you turn a neutral territory into a hive of allied units to tip the balance of the war. These extras rejuvenate the whole genre and add an extra dimension to your attack planning. You may need to practice your poker-face before those hot-seat matches.
Turn based strategy games only work when they fit into the great formula of 'easy to learn hard to master'. Domination is the embodiment of this mantra. Thanks to the tutorial that takes you by the hand and shows you how to crush your enemy, the reminders that pop-up in the game when you forget something important and the ability to rewind a move, you'll soon be getting down and starting to see the potential for tactical and strategic plays. And you'll get the whole 'hard to master' thing if you set the AI too high or take on a master online.
Domination offers five different single player game modes; scenarios, world war, career, assault, and campaigns. Some levels can take a few hours to play and others are short and perfect for a lunch-break (for people who want something a bit deeper than solitaire). Multiplayer is nice and evolved too with hot-seat matches, LAN and quickmatches and the possibility to play via email with 1 day per turn.
In short Domination is a great re-introduction to turn-based games, perfect to discover the genre and great for the turn-based master.
